5 Tips to Stay the Course in Online University

Online university tips

August 8 2020 - Year after year, online university classes continue to grow in popularity. Added flexibility, the ability to work from anywhere, and lots of class options? What's not to like?

While there are many benefits to online university courses, there are also negatives like easily falling behind and failing to manage time effectively.

In order to conquer these negatives, it's crucial that you take all the necessary steps to stay on track. For this reason, we've put together this guide outlining the online university tips you need to succeed.

Manage Your Time Effectively

One of the biggest differences between in-person and online college classes is the difference in structure.

When you're enrolled in an in-person course, you'll have regularly scheduled class sessions, usually twice or three times a week. In many online courses, you'll have much more freedom when it comes to your schedule.

Perhaps you'll have weekly assignments due. In other online classes, everything is due at the end of the semester.

Either way, since you're able to have more freedom in terms of your schedule with online classes, you need to master your time management.

Start with the syllabus. As soon as it's available, take some time to go through it thoroughly. Look for major assignments, quizzes, presentations, and exams.

Then, get out your planner, either paper or digital, and write down all of these important dates. That way, as you're planning personal commitments lkke family functions, vacations, or work events, you'll know what types of coursework you'll be dealing with each week of the semester.

Next, once you have your large items noted, it's time to decide what your weeks will look like. Many people find it helpful to schedule study time on your calendar.

As the semester goes on, evaluate how your time management is going. What's working? What's not?

By doing these regular check-ins, you'll stay on top of your many tasks, setting you up for great success.

Eliminate Distractions

Now let's talk about distractions. Most people these days are very accustomed to using the internet. In fact, it's a part of daily life for most Americans.

While this is a great thing, it can also become a problem when you're working on online classes. Facebook, Youtube, and Netflix are just a click away and a few hours later, you may have lost valuable time by getting distracted.

A good way to conquer this distraction is to turn off your phone while you study. Disaster averted!

Work on Your Space

When you're in a classroom on a college campus, it's set up for optimal learning. It's a quiet room with comfortable chairs, free of clutter.

In order for you to study effectively at home, you should create a similar space.

Look for a table or desk that you can utilize. The dining room table or an office desk are great options.

Also, try to sit near windows. This natural light will be very beneficial to your physical and mental health as you work throughout the day.

Another tip? Pick a chair with a comfortable backrest. This will help you decrease back pain and stiffness.

Last but not least, before you get settled, make sure you have all the supplies you need. This may include a notebook, pens, post-it notes, and a water bottle. That way, you won't have to get up and interrupt your flow when you need something.

Check Your Tech

Here's one of the most important online university tips: make sure your technology works correctly.

It almost goes without saying that without the proper tech, your online study simply will not work.

To start, make sure you have a working laptop or desktop computer. You'll also want a reliable internet provider and router.

Before you start your online classes, make sure your internet is fast and strong enough to handle your needs. Just because you have WiFi doesn't mean that it will be able to handle the bandwidth you need for video chats.

Also, check your video conferencing software. Whether you're using Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or another program, make sure your camera and microphone are properly functioning.

Next, think about your coursework. Make sure you regularly save and backup your information so you don't lose your progress. A good way around this is to use a cloud-based program like Google Docs that saves automatically as you work.

Participate in Your Education

Last but not least, make sure you actively participate in your online courses. Whether you're doing an online business degree or art program, the truth of the matter is that your online experience will be what you make it.

If you sit on the sidelines and do the bare minimum, you won't learn as much as you can. Instead, engage with your professors and fellow classmates.

In video chats, turn on your video so you can see people face to face. Ask questions. Join virtual study groups.

To make this happen, make sure you log in to your course more than once a week. Actively participate in your course's discussion board too.

Doing these things will help you thrive in your online education.

The Online University Tips You Need

Now that you've read through these online university tips, what's next? It's time to apply them to your specific situation.

If you're already enrolled in online classes, great! Then take advantage of these ideas. If you're on the fence about signing up, keep in mind that online college is a great way to further your education in a flexible way.
