4 Tips for Getting an AHIP Certification

AHIP Certification

June 21 2022 - It's no secret that the American population is aging, and, as a result, more and more people are enrolling in Medicare health plans. There were nearly 64 million people on Medicare as of October 2021. If you want to sell Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare part D to this growing number of people, then you need to complete AHIP certification.

Want to make sure that you get this important certification? Read on to learn everything you need to know about AHIP certification!

1. Attend AHIP Training

The first step toward getting AHIP certified is attending a high-quality training program. Like most professional certifications, AHIP certification requires applicants to take an exam in order to get their certification. That means that, at a minimum, your training program  should teach you everything you need to pass the exam.

Expect the exam to cover the basics of the Medicare program, to start. You'll then be tested on Medicare health plans, Part D coverage, and how to properly market the plans. Finally, you'll need to have a firm grasp on how to provide enrollment guidance to prospective enrollees.

2. Create a Strict Study Schedule

You wouldn't go into an exam in high school or college without studying for it first, right? The same is true when it comes to AHIP certification.

Most test-takers work full-time jobs and manage a family, too. That's why it's so critical that you set yourself up for success by creating a set study schedule. For a few weeks before the exam, set aside small amounts of time that you can dedicate to studying.

Tell your family what you're doing so they can give you your space to study and help you succeed.

3. Take Your AHIP Certification Exam

The final step toward getting your AHIP certification is to take the exam. The exam is two hours in length, and it consists of 50 total questions. It's an open-book exam, so be sure to print out your modules to use while you're testing.

In order to pass the exam, you'll need to get a 90% or higher.

4. Exam Retakes

Taking an exam is super stressful. If you struggled on your exam and didn't score above a 90%, don't stress. You can retake the exam two more times in order to get your certification.

If you don't pass the exam within three takes, you'll be able to try again the following plan year.

Is AHIP Certification In Your Future?

One of the most important things you can do for your professional development is to get a variety of certifications.

AHIP certification, however, is required if you want to be qualified to sell Medicare advantage plans or Medicare part D. Attending a high-quality AHIP training program and setting a rigorous study schedule for yourself is the best way to set yourself up for success. With a little hard work, you'll be nailing your career development goals!
